Why Stay in Cinque Terre?
Cinque Terre โ five tiny fishing villages clinging to the steep, terraced coastline of the Italian Riviera โ is one of Europe's most visually dramatic destinations. The candy-coloured houses stacked impossibly on sheer cliffs above the Mediterranean, connected by ancient footpaths through vineyards and olive groves, create scenes of breathtaking beauty.
Manarola and Vernazza are generally considered the most beautiful of the five villages, with their harbours framed by pastel buildings and fishing boats. Hotels in these villages are small โ often just a handful of rooms in converted homes โ and book out months ahead in summer. Riomaggiore, the southernmost village, has the widest accommodation selection and easiest train station access.
The walking trails connecting the five villages are Cinque Terre's greatest attraction. The Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail) follows the coastline between all five villages, with each section offering spectacular views. The steeper high-altitude trails through vineyards and coastal forests provide even more dramatic panoramas for experienced hikers.
Each village has its own character. Monterosso al Mare, the largest, has the only proper sandy beach. Corniglia, perched on a cliff, is the quietest and most remote. Despite their fame, the villages maintain an authentic Italian fishing village charm โ especially in the early morning and evening after the day-trippers depart.
