Why Stay in Tulum?
Tulum has evolved from a sleepy backpacker town into one of the world's most sought-after boutique beach destinations. The unique combination of ancient Mayan ruins perched dramatically on a Caribbean cliff, crystalline cenotes (freshwater sinkholes) hidden in the jungle, and a beach zone lined with eco-chic hotels creates a destination unlike anywhere else in Mexico.
The Tulum Beach Zone stretches along a sandy road between the jungle and the turquoise Caribbean, lined with barefoot-luxury hotels ranging from bamboo-and-palm palapas to design-forward boutique properties. Many operate partially or fully off-grid, with solar power, composting toilets, and candlelit evenings creating an atmospheric (if sometimes rustic) experience.
Tulum Town, a few kilometres inland, offers significantly cheaper accommodation and authentic Mexican restaurants. Hotels and hostels here provide easy access to both the beach zone and the archaeological site via bicycle (the preferred Tulum transport). The town also has the best cenote access — Gran Cenote, Cenote Dos Ojos, and Cenote Calavera are all within cycling distance.
Beyond the beach, Tulum offers extraordinary natural experiences. The cenotes — underground rivers and sinkholes with crystal-clear water — are sacred swimming holes surrounded by jungle. The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve offers pristine mangroves, beaches, and Mayan ruins accessible only by boat. Tulum's Mayan archaeological site is the only major ruins overlooking the Caribbean.
