Why Stay in Reno?
Burning Man is a week-long experiment in community, art, and self-expression held annually on the Black Rock Desert playa in Nevada. While there are no hotels at the event itself β participants camp in Black Rock City β Reno serves as the primary gateway city, located about 2.5 hours south of the playa.
Hotels in Reno fill up fast during Burning Man week, as many participants arrive a day or two early to prepare and stay a night or two after to decompress. The city's casinos and hotel-resorts along Virginia Street offer the widest selection, while boutique properties in the Riverwalk District provide a more intimate experience.
Many burners use Reno hotels for pre-event shopping at Walmart and REI for last-minute supplies, and for post-event showers and recovery before flights home. Hotels near the Reno-Tahoe International Airport are popular for those flying in, while properties near I-80 offer easiest playa access.
The transformation from Reno's neon casino culture to the dusty, surreal playa of Black Rock City is one of the most dramatic transitions in festival travel. Reno also offers proximity to Lake Tahoe, just 45 minutes away, for a stunning post-burn retreat.
