Why Stay in Salzburg?
Salzburg is one of Europe's most perfectly preserved Baroque cities, its Old Town (Altstadt) a UNESCO World Heritage gem nestled between imposing fortress-topped cliffs and the gently flowing Salzach River. Birthplace of Mozart, filming location of The Sound of Music, and host of one of the world's greatest classical music festivals, Salzburg is a city where culture and natural beauty exist in perfect harmony.
Hotels in the Altstadt (Old Town) on the left bank of the Salzach are the most atmospheric, surrounded by medieval churches, fountains, and pedestrianized shopping streets. The Getreidegasse β Mozart's birthplace street β is lined with ornate wrought-iron shop signs. Hotels on the right bank near Mirabell Palace and Gardens offer slightly lower prices with easy bridge-walk access to the Old Town.
The Salzburg Festival (Salzburger Festspiele) runs from late July through August and is one of the world's most prestigious performing arts festivals, featuring opera, theatre, and classical concerts in stunning venues. Hotels during the festival command steep premiums and book out months ahead. December brings magical Christmas markets to Cathedral Square and Mirabell Square.
Side trips from Salzburg include the picture-perfect Lake District (Salzkammergut) with the famous lakeside village of Hallstatt, the ice caves of Eisriesenwelt, and the Alpine meadows (and filming locations) of Werfen and Mondsee. The Sound of Music tour remains one of Austria's most popular excursions.
